Building a strong bond with your baby: tips and ideas

The first days of your baby’s life are a special time to build a strong and lasting bond. Close physical contact helps strengthen emotional attachment while supporting your baby’s emotional development and overall well-being.

You can nurture this bond by:

  • Holding your baby in your arms.
  • Gently stroking or cuddling them.
  • Practising skin-to-skin contact, by placing your baby against your bare chest, especially during or after feeding.

Skin-to-skin contact helps your baby feel safe and secure, supports the regulation of body temperature and breathing, and strengthens the parent-child bond.

Infant Massage

Some babies, particularly those born prematurely or with specific medical needs, may also benefit from gentle infant massage. Massage can promote relaxation, strengthen emotional bonding and support your baby’s development.

Before starting infant massage, ask your healthcare professional for advice and always use gentle, soothing movements.

Stimulating Your Baby

From a very early age, babies enjoy hearing familiar voices. Talk to your baby, sing songs, read stories or gently rock them. These everyday interactions help support language development, hearing and early learning.

Age-appropriate sensory toys, such as rattles or musical mobiles, can also help stimulate your baby’s hearing.

Respect Your Baby’s Rhythm

Every baby is unique. Some are more sensitive than others to noise, light or touch. They may cry more easily, sleep for shorter periods or look away when they become overstimulated.

If this is the case, provide a calm environment with soft lighting and moderate noise levels to help your baby feel comfortable and secure.
